On October 10th, Venezuelan politician María Corina Machado won the Nobel Peace Prize, AP reported, for her work unifying the opposition against President Nicolas Maduro’s government.

Machado, whose presidential candidacy was hijacked by Maduro’s government, chose to live in hiding in Venezuela instead of seeking exile, despite serious threats against her life.

Jørgen Watne Frydnes, chair of the Norwegian Nobel committee, stated that Machado’s laurel comes after her work as a “key, unifying figure” against Maduro, and celebrates her role as a woman “who keeps the flame of democracy burning amid a growing darkness.”
