After withdrawal deadline Israeli troops remain in south Lebanon
Israel has removed its forces from south Lebanon, with the exception of five positions according to Lebanon’s state news agency, the BBC reported on February 18th.
The withdrawal of Israel is a major element of the ceasefire which stopped a conflict of one year with Hezbollah. Israeli ministers said some troops would stay in Lebanon to safeguard the northern communities of Israel.
According to UN officials this is a “delay” in the ceasefire being carried out. The officials said this is “not what we hoped would happen.” Lebanon has also made an objection.
Under the ceasefire, Israel needs to withdraw and Lebanon’s army needs to replace all the armed groups to the south of the Litani River, around 20 miles north of Israel.
