Academic says Palestinian Authority should acquire UNRWA’s role

The UN agency for Palestinian refugees’ (UNRWA) delivery of healthcare and education services to Palestinians should instead be a responsibility that the Palestinian Authority holds, according to a British academic, as covered by Maghrebi Week on October 13th.
In an interview with Maghrebi, Dr Simon Waldman, who is a teacher at the Department of War Studies and the Defence Studies Department of Kings College London, explained that the PA needs to broaden its influence following reform.
Waldman said: “If a reformed Palestinian authority gained a foothold within a technocratic government in the Gaza Strip… surely the services of healthcare and education [that UNRWA operates] should be under the Palestinian authority.”
