Pupils suspended in a South African school after assault

According to BBC News Africa, on October 22, a video circulated of a horrific incident that occurred at Milnerton High School in Cape Town has spread all across social platforms.
In this video, several boys are seen attacking a pupil with various objects, such as a hockey stick, a hose pipe and a belt.
Since this traumatic incident, it has caused anger for parents of children who attend the school, and a protest took place where police arrived and dispersed the protest by firing tear gas.
The mother of the 16-year-old boy who was the victim of the attack had spoken with an online publication, News24, and stated that her son had cancer and completed his chemotherapy earlier this year.
“My child had just beaten cancer, only for something like this to happen to him.” The boy’s mother said.”
Boys laughing and making fun while cheering on each other in this two-minute video, with the boy pleading with his attackers to stop.
Bullying in schools is a serious issue in South Africa, with many videos going viral of such violent attacks.
South Africa is one of many countries that are battling harassment and bullying. In 2023, there were many talks about how Egypt has set a promise to act tough on sexual harassment and bullying.
The Egyptian parliament speaker, Hanafy El-Gebaly, spoke on the matter: “It’s not enough to increase penalties for harassment and bullying; the media must play an active role in raising public awareness.”
The international human rights organisation had made a post out on X stating” no child should ever endure such brutality in a space where pupils should be safe and protected from harm.”
A Chairperson of parliament, Joy Maimela, shared her utter horror over the video and had mentioned that the incident” is not merely bullying but borders on assault. This criminal offence demands urgent and decisive action from all relevant authorities.”
