Morocco’s video gaming industry is booming
As the global gaming industry continues its rapid expansion, emerging economies are actively seeking to leverage this growing market, and Morocco is no exception.
According to data from Statista, a research firm, revenues within Morocco’s video game industry grew by an average of 15% year-on-year in 2023. This growth was mainly supported by the country’s sizable and tech-savvy young population.
In 2023, Morocco’s domestic gaming industry expanded to $218.5 million, up from $189.5 million the previous year.
The increasing profitability of the gaming industry has not gone unnoticed by policymakers. The Moroccan government is proactively investing in the gaming sector as part of its strategy to boost tourism and stimulate overall economic growth.
In November 2021, Minister of Culture, Youth, and Communication, Mohamed Mehdi Bensaid, announced Morocco’s plans to construct the nation’s first dedicated city for the gaming industry.
Despite these positive developments, Morocco’s domestic gaming industry currently accounts for only 0.07% of global revenues, which exceeded $175 billion in 2022. Nevertheless, with the largest number of licensed professional gamers in Africa at 37,000 players, the country could be a regional headrunner in this promising industry.
