A cartoon published in the French newspaper Liberation, has sparked outrage for mocking the hunger of Palestinians in Gaza during the month of Ramadan.

As reported on March 12th by Middle East Monitor, the cartoon depicts a devastated landscape of Gaza, a man chasing bugs and mice, and a woman with a starving boy, who alerts the man to withhold eating until sunset, as a reference to the fasting practice during the month of Ramadan.

Drawn by Corrine Rey, a former cartoonist at Charlie Hebdo, who has often produced controversial satirical content, the cartoon has sparked a heated debate in social media. Critics argue that it purposefully belittles the suffering and starvation currently experienced by Palestinians in Gaza.

The cartoon was published amidst reports by UNICEF that one in six Gazan children under the age of two is facing acute malnutrition.
