Four employees were arrested for mistakenly raising the Turkish flag instead of the Tunisian flag, sparking controversy in Tunisia. This incident, which occurred at the national train company’s headquarters in Tunis on September 10, 2024, quickly sparked a heated controversy, according to Middle East Eye and agencies.

Detected and corrected within minutes, this blunder prompted the  Tunisian National Railways Company (SNCFT) to issue a public apology and launch an internal investigation. Authorities, for their part, responded firmly, arresting the four employees. This decision highlights the particular sensitivity given to national symbols in Tunisia, especially in a tense political context.

The rapid spread of videos and images of the incident on social media amplified the controversy. While some downplayed the error, others saw it as a blatant disrespect toward national emblems.

This event comes as President Saied prepares for the upcoming elections. Since taking office, he has concentrated power in his hands, raising concerns among the opposition and the international community.

It is worth noting that this is not the first time the Tunisian flag has been at the center of controversy. Last May, during a sporting event, an incident led to the covering of the Tunisian flag in accordance with World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) sanctions. The decision to hide the flag sparked outrage, leading to the arrest of three sports officials, including the head of the Tunisian Anti-Doping Agency.

Although the Tunisian and Turkish flags share similarities in design (colors, crescent, and star), there are subtle differences that distinguish them. However, their resemblance may have led to confusion.
