Republican US Senator Joe Wilson has called for America to cut their sending of aid to Tunisia. According to Middle East Monitor on February 3rd, Wilson also warned that President Kais Saied may have a fate “similar” to that of recently ousted former Syrian President Bashar Al-Assad. This came just 3 days after Saied again extended his exceptional emergency powers until the end of 2025.
Wilson wrote on X: “I warned years ago about Kais Saied’s authoritarian takeover of Tunisia. Today sadly, Tunisia is a full rule of gun police state working with the CCP, War Criminal Putin, and the Iranian regime. We must cut aid & impose sanctions. Trump will fix it.”

He also shared an old picture of the Tunisian president shaking hands with Al-Assad, saying of the photo: “Tunisian dictator Kais Saied was a major supporter of the brutal Assad regime in Syria. Assad is not laughing anymore and Saied will go the way of Assad.”

Democratic Representative Ilhan Omar had already demanded a freeze on US security assistance and aid to Tunisia after Saied’s usage of extreme measures in 2021,  as he froze the work of both parliament and the government.

The US Ambassador to Tunisia Joey Hood has confirmed that since 2011,the US has provided Tunisia with over $1 billion in security assistance.

In December 2024, the Pentagon revealed a $107.7 million deal between the US State Department and Tunisia as the US allowed Tunisia to purchase 184 Javelin missiles.

A US Department of State spokesperson said that the deal will “enhance Tunisia’s long-term defensive capabilities to protect its sovereignty and territorial integrity while meeting national defence requirements.”
