In a bid to reduce wait times Morocco’s National Airports Office (ONDA) have removed security scanners and metal detectors from the entrances of Mohammed V Airport in Casablanca.

According to Morocco World News, Marrakech Airport is set to also follow this move.

ONDA said: “In a continuous effort to improve customer experience, inspection devices – scanner and metal detector – at the entrances of Casablanca’s Mohammed V Airport have been relocated, thus eliminating long queues.”

“This measure will allow travelers to access various airport entry points more quickly, streamlining the boarding process,” they added.

This initiative was organised by the Ministry of Interior, the General Directorate of National Security (DGSN), and the Royal Gendarmerie, and is part of ONDA’s “Airports 2030” modernisation plan.

In December the government unveiled plans for a $4 billion expansion at Mohammed V Airport.

Transport and Logistics Minister Abdessamad Kayouh said the project will increase the airport’s capacity from 15 to 45 million passengers each year by 2029.

In 2024, Morocco’s airports saw around 32 million passengers, Morocco is now making steps to improve its aviation infrastructure to match this massive growth.

Removing entrance security scanners is expected to reduce passenger waiting times from 45 to 25 minutes at Mohammed V Airport.

Further changes that will enhance passenger experience will soon be instated; Morocco is aiming for its airports to be able to handle an increase of up to 60 million passengers by 2030.

Modernization efforts are especially part of Morocco’s preparation for hosting the 2030 FIFA World Cup.

In January, Morocco pledged to invest $14 billion in airports and railways.
