French President Emmanuel Macron is now the “only point of reference” for relations between the two countries according to Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune.

According to France 24 on March 23rd, Tebboune told an Algerian broadcaster that: “We will keep President Macron as our sole point of reference. He remains the French President, and all problems must be resolved with him or with the person he delegates.”

Tebboune reiterated his “complete confidence” in his foreign minister Ahmed Attaf who has claimed that Algeria are being forced to deal with a “vengeful and hateful French far right.”

Relations between Algeria and its former coloniser have been fraught in recent years as issues such as immigration and the Western Sahara have increased tensions.

As Maghrebi reported on February 5th, Tebboune has described relations between the two countries as disastrous: “There is no progress, except in trade relations. Political dialogue is practically suspended.”

Algeria has been refusing to accept deported nationals from France, with France claiming they are dangerous and irregular migrants and Algeria accusing France of acting outside of protocol.

France had planned to deport around 60 Algerian citizens according to Maghrebi on March 18th however the list was rejected by the Algerian foreign ministry on the grounds that they “categorically reject threats and intimidation”.

The failed deportation plans have exacerbated tensions that have been heightened since France recognised Moroccan autonomy over the Western Sahara region.

As a former colony, Algeria has had a unique and close relationship with France ever since gaining independence in 1962.

Algerian nationals have enjoyed access to France due to a series of agreements and protocols that have maintained a relationship for over 60 years.

However, the events of recent years are threatening this relationship with it now reaching the point where the Algerian President has determined that no one other than the Macron can be responsible for negotiations in the future.
