Iran has found itself tangled up in yet another diplomatic conspiracy – this time over an alleged plot targeting the Zionist embassy in London. According to the Algerian outlet, AL24 News, eight men, including seven Iranian nationals, were arrested by British Police on suspicion of terrorism targeting the embassy on May 3rd.

Tehran has vehemently denied any Iranian involvement in the so-called plot, dismissing Western media reports as suspicious and urging the UK to ensure transparency and due process.

Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi posted on X on May 8th that “Iran in no uncertain terms categorically rejects any involvement in such actions and confirms that we have not been informed of any allegations via proper diplomatic channels.” He added that Iran would be ready to assist with the investigation, requesting the British authorities to maintain transparency and cooperation.

Meanwhile, the UK Commissioner for Countering Extremism, Robin Simcox, was more polemic in his stance: “The scale of Iranian-backed activity in this country is probably underestimated,” he told the BBC. “Iran also looks to spread its influence in the UK via religious institutes it controls, television channels, charities, educational institutes, and online disinformation campaigns.”

Yet some analysts suspect a false flag. Araqchi himself cautioned that “third parties” might attempt to sabotage diplomatic efforts between the two countries to derail ongoing negotiations between Iran and the United States, the fourth round of which is set for May 10th in Oman. Iran maintains that the timing of the plot implicates Israel, an outspoken critic of the talks.

Despite suspicions, the Iranian embassy in London confirmed Ambassador Ali Mousavi’s meeting with UK Parliamentary Under-Secretary Hamish Falconer. According to the embassy, the two sides reaffirmed their mutual respect for sovereignty, international law, and the principle of non-interference. British officials reportedly assured Iran that the arrested individuals would receive fair treatment and due process.
