The non-governmental human rights group Libyan Crime Watch has accused Khalifa Haftar, head of the Libyan National Army, and the eastern government he is aligned with of deliberately sabotaging local elections, according to the Libya Observer on July 12th.

Voter card distribution was halted by authorities in eastern Libya just days after beginning, and the Crimes Watch has documented assaults by gunmen at distribution centers where staff were threatened and election materials seized.

The group are holding Haftar’s forces and the government legally responsible for these events and have called on the Attorney General to carry out an independent investigation on the election obstruction.
