Algeria-backed Polisario Front contests Western Sahara plan
The Algeria-backed Polisario Front expressed its rejection of the US-backed Western Sahara resolution, which promotes the Sahrawi people’s autonomy under Moroccan sovereignty, as reported in Maghrebi Week on November 3rd.
The plan theoretically recognises Morocco’s claim to the disputed Western Sahara territory. The Polisario Front is concerned that the plan would “violate the right to Sahrawi self-determination”, according to the Moroccan-friendly Atalayar.
However, worsening living conditions in refugee camps in Tindouf, on the Algeria side, are causing tensions and challenging the group’s ability to represent the Sahrawi people’s best interests.
