Uganda: election crackdown condemned
The UN has condemned the intensifying crackdown on media and opposition in Uganda ahead of the upcoming elections on January 15th, according to a report by Africanews via AP on December 4th.
According to the UN’s rights agency, at least 550 people have been arrested and detained since early 2025. The December 3rd statement also expressed concerns about the restrictions on press freedoms, such as journalists having their accreditation withdrawn, allegedly due to critical reporting.
President Yoweri Museveni, 81, confirmed his intention to run for re-election in September; he has held office since 1986 but was not officially elected until 1996.
