Nine women were killed and dozens more injured in Adamawa state, northeast Nigeria, after the army reportedly opened fire on protesters, reports AP on 9th December.

The victims were demonstrating on a major road against the army’s violent handling of community clashes, and the soldiers shot them as they were reportedly blocked from passing. The Nigerian army has denied the reports and blamed local militias, despite eyewitness testimonies and relatives of the victims confirming the details.

Human rights NGOs have highlighted Nigeria’s history of human rights abuse, with recent clashes with protesters in Abuja last October.
