Algeria: collapse of historical mosque in casbah
A 16th century mosque has partially collapsed in the famous Casbah of Algiers, reports Algerie 360 on 23rd December. Its minaret was particularly impacted.
The Sidi Mohamed Cherif mosque was in poor conditions due to its age and erosion, and it is currently undergoing repairs as part of a wider restoration plan in the area.
While there are no casualties, the mosque represents an important part of the city’s cultural and religious history, serving as a school during the colonial period, and it is known as a site of pilgrimage as it was built around the shrine of a local saint.
