Moroccan MP’s fraud claims spark investigation into milling industry
Ahmed Touizi, Moroccan MP and president of the PAM group (Party of Authenticity and Modernity) sparked controversy with fraud claims against the milling industry, Moroccan-government friendly Le Matin reported on October 30th.
During a debate in Parliament, Touizi accused flour mills of “grinding paper”, suggesting they were altering a staple product. Milling unions immediately reacted by asking Touizi to provide evidence or to retract his comments; he later claimed his words were metaphorical.
Nevertheless, the controversy quickly spread, sparking fears about hygiene. An official investigation has now been opened by a Rabat court, in a wider context of protests against corruption.
