Man sentenced in Morocco over human trafficking scheme
On November 4th, Morocco recorded its first conviction related to human trafficking through an overseas job scam, with the court sentencing the man to five years in prison and a $107,300 fine, according to AP News.
The trafficking cases included multiple young Moroccans who were apparently lured by a job offer online that promised good-paying work in Thailand, but they were ultimately trafficked to Myanmar to work forcefully in online scams and fraud.
According to the UN, 120,000 people around the world are trapped in similar scam centres, and similar cases are appearing in Moroccan courts, but the litigant, Nabil Moafik, said that he could never commit such a “crime against humanity” and also denied all of charges.
