UN votes to remove sanctions on Syrian president
The UN Security Council on November 6th voted to remove sanctions on Syria’s president Ahmed al-Sharaa, prompting him to he be delisted from the Al-Qaida Sanctions list, according to France 24 via AFP.
The vote was on a US resolution calling for the formal lifting of the sanctions imposed on the Syrian leader. The move is mostly symbolic, as ever since he assumed the leadership of his country, the sanctions were waived temporarily when he needed to travel abroad, as the leader.
The decision was made ahead of the Syrian president’s visit to the White House, and Syria’s Foreign Minister Asaad al-Shaibani has thanked the US and the countries of the UN Security Council for supporting Syria.
