25 civilians killed in convoy ambush, says Mali army
25 civilians were killed and 13 others injured in an insurgent ambush of a military-escorted convoy near the city of Gao in northeast Mali on February 7th, the army said late on February 8th according to Reuters.
A local official’s account of the incident put the death toll up to 56, significantly higher than the army figure, and added that there were an unknown number of military casualties.
The insurgents attacked near the village of Kobe, around 30 km (or 19 miles) from Gao in an area where to ISIS and Al Qaeda linked groups have been active for over ten years, plunging Mali and its neighbors Burkina Faso and Niger into instability.
