Fate of Niger’s president ‘uncertain’ after July coup

Niger’s overthrown president, Mohamed Bazoum, has been in detention with his wife and son for nearly three months following the July coup, with their fate still unknown.

The ousted president refuses to resign and has dashed hopes that he could win in court, according to Africa News and AFP on October 13th.

Bazoum is being detained by the military junta as a prisoner in the presidential palace with his family.

Sources close to him told AFP that he is ‘sequestered without electricity,’ and with intermittent access to water.

Mohamed Bazoum told The Washington Post that he is a ‘hostage.’ He also told Human Rights Watch, an NGO, that the treatment his family is receiving is ‘inhuman and cruel.’
