Chess in the kingdom
In what was a checkmate for chess enthusiasts, players from around the country and beyond united to compete in a tournament in Tangier, reports Africa News, December 15.
The event, seen as a success by competitors, took place at the Farah Hotel.
The northwestern Moroccan city brought together highly ranked chess players in what was a crunchy and competitive battle of the minds.

Oubai Ziani, co-founder of On Chess Coaching, highlighted the importance of the OPEN DE TANGIER and hoped that the sport would continue growing in popularity in the country.
“Today, over 100 players took part in our tournament. Tournaments are an opportunity for players to test and evaluate themselves. For me, this is essential,” he said.
People in Morocco have highlighted the game’s importance as it promotes discipline and problem solving despite the lack of competitions in the kingdom.
Chess referee Zoheir Slami noted, “there’s a lack of a federation (in Morocco) run by competent people.”
