At least 240 people have been charged with treason over post-election protests in Tanzania, according to BBC News via agencies on November 7th.

President Samia Suluhu Hassan was declared the winner of the October 29th election, which barred opposition candidates from standing, banned foreign journalists and imposed a curfew.

Protestors have faced a violent crackdown from authorities, which has killed an estimated 700 people. Internet access was blocked for six days before being partially restored on November 4th; however, citizens were warned that sharing images and videos that may cause panic could result in “treason charges.”
