UN calls for investigation into Tanzanian election violence
The UN called for an investigation into deaths caused by post-election violence in Tanzania on November 11th, according to a report by Africa News and AP on November 12th.
At least 700 people have been killed in widespread parties over the October 29th election, which President Samia Suluhu Hassan won. Opposition candidates were barred from running, and foreign journalists were banned, while internet blackouts have made it difficult to verify information.
The opposition party Chadema estimates that 2000 people have died in violent crackdowns by authorities. As of November 7th, more than 240 people are thought to have been charged with treason over post-election demonstrations.
