Police were deployed across major Tanzanian cities ahead of planned protests on the nation’s Independence Day, according to a report from Africa News via AP on December 9th.

The unrest is related to the October 29th elections, which have led authorities to urge protesters to stay home, as the planned Independence Day protests were designated by Tanzanian authorities as an attempted coup.

President Samia Suluhu Hassan won the election, which was marred by the exclusion of opposition candidates and a ban on foreign journalists reporting on the event.
