Saudi Arabia’s tourism sector hit record visitor numbers and expenses in 2025, becoming a stronger part of the national economy, as reported by Arabian Business on February 9th.

Speaking at the Ministerial Panel, “When Government Works for Business” during the Public Investment Fund (PIF) Private Sector Forum, Ahmed Al-Khateeb, Tourism Minister, said the sector’s growth is linked to the goals of Saudi Vision 2030, which also includes the government’s plan to reduce reliance on oil and expand other industries.

He said tourism’s share of the country’s GDP has risen from 3.5% in 2019 to 5% today. The long-term goal is to increase that figure to 10%.

Employment in the sector has also increased, with more than one million people now working in tourism, up from around 750,000 in recent years. Al-Khateeb noted that tourism accounts for about 10% of the global economy and is one of the largest sources of jobs worldwide.

The minister said cooperation between the Ministry of Tourism, the Public Investment Fund and other partners has helped create new opportunities for the private sector. He added that the government wants local companies to play a larger role as the sector expands.

Saudi Arabia is aiming to double tourism’s contribution to the economy from SR300 billion (80 billion US dollars) to SR600 billion (160 billion US dollars). The sector is expected to continue creating jobs as businesses hire and train Saudi nationals.

The Public Investment Fund is leading the development of large tourism projects, including the Red Sea destination and Qiddiya. These projects are meant to attract visitors and encourage private investment in hotels, entertainment and travel services. The government is also offering support through the Tourism Development Fund, which provides financing and incentives to investors.

Looking ahead, international exhibitions and major sports events are expected to push annual visitor numbers to 150 million. Officials say this will open further opportunities for businesses as Saudi Arabia continues to expand its tourism sector.
