Muslim Scholars Demand Release of Ghannouchi
The International Union for Muslim Scholars urged Tunisian President Kais Saied on June 7 to release former parliament speaker Rached Ghannouchi from jail, according to A News.
Ghannouchi was arrested on April 17 as part of a broader political crackdown against Saied’s opponents.
The Union stated that individual and collective rights are at stake in Tunisia, and that without them, society will lose the fundamental attributes of Islamic Sharia and Muslim countries.
Ghannouchi is one of many members of his party, the Islamic party Ennahda, to be arrested and charged with conspiring against state security. Ennahda was the largest political party in Tunisia before Saied took power, and it was dissolved in July 2021 by Saied. On May 15, he was sentenced to one year imprisonment.
